Health│Hauora Box│Wellbeing│ 2.04.20~

So in health class last week we made a Hauora box that contained certain words. While reading this you must be questioning what is a Hauora box? Hauora the word itself means wellbeing and wellbeing has to do everything with yourself. We as students were taught wellbeing by breaking them up into four different dimensions.

The first dimension is Mental and Emotional. To simply put it, Mental and emotional are thoughts and feelings. Everything you feel and think negatively and positively affects your Mental and Emotional well-being. The Māori word for Mental and Emotional is Taha Hinegaro. Your well-being is greatly affected more often than you realise, positive and negative wise. Simply having somebody greet you in the morning with a smile, will instantly boost your self esteem, whereas a person who begins giggling at your mistake can really change your opinion on activities or yourself. These types of examples are ways your Spiritual well being is affected.

Up next we have Social well-being. Things such as family, friends, relationships, sense of belonging and many more make up your Social well-being.If you haven’t guessed Social wellbeing has all to do with socializing or speaking, more like interacting. The Māori word for Social wellbeing is, Taha Whanau(family in Māori). My Social wellbeing has been improving recently with my mum. She, my brother, friend and I went for a very long drive, speaking about how school has been so far, asking her how her day was. This has made my mum’s and I’s bond stronger.

Thirdly we have Physical wellbeing. Physical wellbeing has to do all with your body, your body growth, body development, body care yes and having balance in between sleep, exercise and nutrition. Physical wellbeing translated in Māori is Taha Tinana. Physically I have been improving by clearing my mind and taking walks down to the reserve. Being under a tree, watching the sun set, feeling the wind gush on my hair, hearing the birds all these small things made my lungs and body relax.

Lastly we have Taha Wairua, translated to english Spiritual well being. When people hear about the word “spiritual” they think all about religion and god, whereas in health or in general Spiritual wellbeing has to do with many more than religion. Spirituality all has to do with the deep stuff inside of you, like knowing your self worth keeping track of your self esteem, having a purpose in life and so on. Although I still need to grow spiritually, I have been improving. I felt a sense of an achievement, due to my friend. She was feeling low, and as a friend I served my duty, and took her mind off things by enjoying life in the moment. It was awesome!

After learning about four dimensions that make your wellbeing, things in life can leave such a huge impact on your wellbeing making it positive or negative. It is very important to be kind wholeheartedly and to smile at others even at your worst times. Everything has an effect on people whether you see it or not. These are known as the four dimensions or “walls” that make Te Whare Tapa Wha, your personal wellbeing. Thank you c:
